Mt. Si Dual

01/22/2010

The Totem Wrestlers hosted their first home meet of the year on Tuesday January 18th against Mt. Si.  The home team was very excited for the opportunity to wrestle in front of the home crowd, and the enthusiam showed in their warm up and preparation.  The night started off with two early JV matches.  Kyle Kasner and Max Hummer both worked hard against strong wrestlers and were able to fight them off for a time until succombing to pins in the 2nd and 3rd round of their matches.  The varsity dual started at 7:30 under the spotlight hovering over the center of the mat.  The opening weight of 140 was a forfeit for the Totems, real action would follow at 145.  The opening two matches of the dual would prove to be the most fruitful for the Totems.  Zanwar Faraj at 145 wrestled a back and forth match that saw only 1 takedown but 7 reversals between the two wrestlers.  The defining moment would come with under 30 seconds in the match when Zanwar locked up a cradle and turned it for 2 nearfall points.  he was then able to hold on until the buzzer to secure a 10-8 victory.  The following match at 152 would prove to be lower scoring but no less intense.  Tomas Narvaja, the Sammamish wrestler would be outscored 3-0 in the opening two periods, but would save his scoring for when it counted most.  Tomas chose down in the 3rd period and started off successfully with a reversal making the score 3-2.  Tomas, however, was unsuccesful in his attempts to turn his opponent.  With 19 seconds left he chose his last option, letting him up for an escape point with the hope of taking him down immediately for the tie.  Tomas achieved his goal and went beyond using the head and arm to score three near fall points for the 7-4 victory!  The next two matches of the dual were wrestled by captains Junior Benitez at 160 and Paco Jacinto at 171.  The two captains were up against a couple of Mt. Si's best wrestlers.  Despite their best efforts in front of the home crowd, the two would lose by fall Junior in a time of 3:23 and Paco in a time of 5:19.  The following 4 weight classes would further the Mt Si lead as 3 first period pins and one forfeit would give them 24 team points.  But at 112 the 3rd Totem captain A.J. Leitch would put forth a great effort giving up no back points and only 1 takedown and 1 reversal to hold his opponent to a victory by decision.  Some excitement occurred when A.J. bridged into his opponent and nearly reversed him to his back, but the Mt. Si opponent slipped away and came out with the 4-0 victory.  The Totems would secure their last team points of the night at 119 as Mitch Williams took a foreit for 6 points.  And after a double forfeit at 125 the dual would end with two more first period victories for Mt Si.  The final score would end at 12-57 in favor of Mt. Si.  The Totems will have one more home dual against Bellevue and Interlake on Monday January 24th before post season competition begins.
